What Is This Study About?

This study explored whether taking apple cider vinegar daily could help young people who are overweight or obese lose weight and improve their overall health.

Who Conducted This Research?

  • Researchers: Dr. Rony Abou-Khalil, Jeanne Andary, and Elissar El-Hayek.
  • Institutions: Holy Spirit University of Kaslik (USEK), Jounieh, and the American University of Science and Technology, Beirut, Lebanon.
  • These are prestigious universities known for their contributions to health and nutrition research.

Who Participated in This Study?

  • Participants: 120 young people aged 12 to 25 years, all classified as overweight or obese.
  • They were split into four groups: three groups took different doses of ACV (5 mL, 10 mL, or 15 mL), while one group took a placebo.

What Was the Method?

  • This was a 12-week randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, meaning neither participants nor researchers knew who received ACV or the placebo, ensuring accurate results.

What Did They Find?

General Findings

  • Taking ACV daily significantly reduced:
    • Body weight
    • Waist and hip measurements
    • Body fat percentage
    • Blood sugar, triglyceride, and cholesterol levels

Specific Results

  1. Participants taking 15 mL of ACV daily lost 6 to 8 kilograms (13 to 17.6 lbs) in just 12 weeks.
  2. Waist circumference dropped by an average of 4 centimeters (1.57 inches).
  3. Blood sugar decreased from 120 mg/dL to 108 mg/dL, and triglycerides dropped significantly.

Why Does ACV Work?

The key ingredient, acetic acid, may:

  • Slow stomach emptying, helping you feel full longer.
  • Improve insulin sensitivity, reducing blood sugar spikes.
  • Boost fat metabolism and reduce fat storage.

What Makes This Study Special?

  • It’s the first study of its kind in Lebanon, providing region-specific insights into weight management.
  • Results show ACV could be a natural, safe addition to weight management strategies without side effects.

Can This Help You?

If you’re exploring ways to manage weight naturally, this study suggests adding a small daily dose of ACV could complement a healthy diet and active lifestyle.
