Discover How ES Strengthens Muscles: Insights from Poland’s Prestigious Researchers

Welcome to another post in the ORIEMS FIT RESEARCH DIGEST, where we simplify cutting-edge studies to inspire curiosity and learning.

Today’s research highlights the potential of Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) - a niche of EMS to improve muscle strength as an alternative to traditional workouts.

Let’s dive into the findings from Poland’s renowned Wroclaw University of Health and Sport Sciences.

What’s This Research About?

Research Article Name:
Assessment of the Strength Parameters of the Quadriceps Femoris Muscles in Polish University Students after a 3-Week Program of Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation Using the RSQ1 Method

Authors:
Aleksandra Rywacka, Małgorzata Stefańska, Alicja Dziuba-Słonina

Who Did This Research and Where?

  • Institution: Wroclaw University of Health and Sport Sciences, Poland.
  • Published In: International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health (2021), a globally trusted, peer-reviewed journal.
  • Location: The study took place in Wroclaw, Poland, a city known for its innovation in sports science.

What Was the Goal?

To determine whether NMES using the RSQ1 method could improve quadriceps strength in healthy individuals compared to traditional isometric exercises.

Who Was Studied?

  • Participants: 19 healthy university students (11 women, 8 men), aged 22-30.
  • Groups:
    • NMES Group: Received RSQ1 NMES for 30 minutes during 10 sessions over 3 weeks.
    • Control Group: Performed traditional isometric strength training at home without EMS.

What Did the Researchers Find?

General Positive Findings

NMES using the RSQ1 method effectively improved quadriceps strength, showing comparable results to traditional strength training.

This makes NMES a promising option for individuals unable to perform conventional workouts.

Specific Positive Findings with Evidence

  1. Increased Peak Torque in Knee Flexors:

    • NMES led to a 9% improvement in knee flexor strength for the left leg (from 91.95 Nm to 102.12 Nm, p = 0.0469).
    • Right leg knee flexor strength increased by 8% (from 97.45 Nm to 105.74 Nm, p = 0.0367).
  2. Improved Muscle Circumference:

    • Thigh circumference (10 cm above the patella) in the left leg increased by 2% (from 51.10 cm to 52.05 cm, p = 0.0357).
    • Similarly, a significant increase was observed 20 cm above the patella (from 59.50 cm to 60.40 cm, p = 0.0423).
  3. Balance Between Flexor and Extensor Muscles:

    • NMES improved the balance between antagonist muscle groups, particularly benefiting weaker muscle groups.

Why Could NMES Be Helpful?

  1. For People with Limited Exercise Ability: NMES is an effective alternative for individuals recovering from surgery or injuries, those with limited mobility, or anyone struggling to fit traditional workouts into their schedule.
  2. For Muscle Recovery: NMES can activate deep muscle fibers, promoting recovery and enhancing muscle strength without joint stress.
  3. For Time Efficiency: Achieving results comparable to traditional workouts in less time makes NMES ideal for busy lifestyles.

How Can NMES Help You?

If you’re considering an NMES device, this study shows it can:

  • Build muscle strength and improve balance.
  • Increase muscle size and flexibility.
  • Provide a safe and efficient workout alternative.

What Do You Think?

Would you try NMES as an alternative to traditional workouts?
