How Japanese Health Science Experts Use EMS to Improve Health During Long Sitting Hours

How EMS Can Help When Sitting for Long Hours?

Welcome to Oriems Fit Research Digest!

At Oriems Fit, we’re dedicated to uncovering fascinating research about how technology can improve health and well-being. Today, we’re talking about an important study that looks at how Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS) can be a game-changer for people who sit for long periods. This blog is part of our series where we share exciting research that could inspire you to explore more.

Research Overview

  • Study Title: Effect of Electrical Muscle Stimulation on Vascular Endothelial Function during Prolonged Sitting
  • Authors: Mizuki Ishikawa, PT, PhD, Hajime Miura, PhD, Yasuaki Tamura, PT, PhD, and Ayako Murakami, PhD
  • Conducted At: Osaka Yukioka College of Health Science, Tokushima University, and Shikoku University in Japan.
These institutions are renowned for their focus on health sciences and rehabilitation research.
  • Funding: No external funding was disclosed.

What Was This Study About?

The researchers wanted to see if EMS could help reduce the negative effects of sitting for too long. Sitting for long hours can lead to poor blood flow and increase the risk of heart problems. By using EMS, which makes muscles contract without active exercise, they aimed to improve blood circulation.

Who Was Involved?

The study involved 12 healthy men in their early 20s. They didn’t smoke or take medications, ensuring the results were not influenced by other factors.

How Did They Test It?

  • Participants sat for one hour without moving much (control group).
  • On a different day, they used EMS on their legs while sitting (EMS group).
  • EMS was applied to the thighs and calves at a safe intensity for 20 minutes.
  • The researchers measured how well the blood vessels in the arm worked before and after sitting.

What Did They Find?

  1. Better Blood Flow with EMS:

    • Without EMS, blood flow in the control group decreased after sitting.
    • With EMS, blood flow improved significantly after sitting, showing that EMS can keep blood vessels healthy.
  2. Key Numbers:

    • Blood vessel function (measured as nFMD) improved from 0.84 to 1.14 in the EMS group, while it dropped in the control group.
  3. No Negative Side Effects:

    • EMS did not interfere with other activities like typing during the test, showing it’s easy to use during work.

Why EMS Could Be Helpful

  • Improves Circulation: EMS helps blood flow better, reducing the risk of issues caused by sitting too long.
  • Convenient Alternative: It’s hard to find time for exercise at work, but EMS can be done while sitting, making it an easy solution.

How This Study Can Help You

If you use an Oriems Fit EMS device, you can:

  • Use it during breaks or while sitting to keep your blood flowing.
  • Help your body stay active even on busy days when exercise isn’t possible.
