They took 15 severely disabled patients with advanced COPD (average lung function just 38–40% of normal) who were so breathless they scored 4 or 5 on the official breathlessness scale — meaning they got out of breath after walking just 100 yards or were often too breathless to leave the house.

For six weeks these patients used a simple home EMS machine on their thigh muscles while sitting comfortably. No gym. No heavy breathing. Just pads and the machine.
What the numbers showed is genuinely impressive:

- Their thigh muscle strength (peak torque) shot up from 64.4 N·m to 91.8 N·m — a 42% increase.

- Their exercise endurance time almost doubled — from 4.5 minutes to 8.4 minutes.
- Peak oxygen uptake rose by 20%.

- Most importantly for daily life, their breathlessness score on the Chronic Respiratory Disease Questionnaire improved by 1.2 points — well above the level doctors consider a meaningful, life-changing difference.
- Every single patient completed the full programme (100% success rate) — even the four who had mild flare-ups of their COPD during the six weeks.
- Zero side effects. Zero pain. Zero drop-outs.
