Could EMS Help You Avoid a Knee Replacement?

Welcome to another edition of the Oriems Fit Research Digest series!. We love sharing new and exciting research to spark your curiosity and show you how science is always finding new ways to support our wellness.

For the fact-checkers and research lovers out there, you can find the link to the full original study at the end of this post so you can dive into the nitty-gritty details yourself!.

Could EMS Help You Avoid a Knee Replacement?

Have you ever wondered if there's a way to keep your knees strong without the "no pain, no gain" struggle?. A prestigious research group in Ireland looked into exactly that, exploring whether Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES)—a close relative of EMS—could be a secret weapon for people facing serious knee issues.

Who Did This Research and When?

  • The Researchers: Led by Mr. Joshua Chong Yew Ong and a team from Cappagh National Orthopaedic Hospital and Dublin City University (DCU) in Ireland.

  • Location: Dublin, Ireland.

  • When: The study was registered and active between 2008 and 2009.

  • Funding: The work was supported by Cappagh National Orthopaedic Hospital, Dublin City University, and Bio-medical Research (Ireland).

What is This Research About?

The researchers wanted to see if using electrical pulses to "exercise" the thigh muscles (the quadriceps) could make them stronger and bigger. They hoped this would reduce knee pain and improve how well people could move, potentially delaying or even negating the need for a knee replacement in younger patients.

Who Was Studied?

  • Age: Adults aged 45 to 55 years old.

  • Condition: People with Grade 3 or 4 knee arthritis (diagnosed by a doctor) who were still able to walk.

  • Exclusions: They didn't include people with morbid obesity (BMI over 40) or those with pacemakers.

Which Research Method Was Used?

This was a randomized, single-blinded clinical trial. One group used an electrical stimulation device for 20 minutes, 5 days a week for 6 weeks, while the control group received standard care.

What Were the Findings?

The study set out to prove several positive benefits for using electrical stimulation:

  • Stronger Muscles: The program was designed to induce muscle hypertrophy (growth) and increase both isometric and isokinetic strength.

  • Better Movement: It aimed to restore the "range of movement" in the knee and fix "quadriceps weakness".

  • Less Pain: A major goal was to see a decrease in knee pain.

  • Easier Daily Life: They looked for improvements in "functional capacity," meaning it's easier to walk or climb stairs.

  • Molecular Benefits: The research even looked for "up-regulation" of growth genes (like IGF-1) and "down-regulation" of muscle-wasting pathways.

Why Could EMS Be Helpful?

Knee pain often comes from weak thigh muscles that can't support the joint properly. EMS allows you to strengthen these muscles without putting heavy stress or "wear and tear" on the painful joint itself, because the device does the work of making the muscle contract while you sit still.
