  • Without anything on their legs, the average person’s leg volume went up by 41ml – the equivalent of a large shot glass of fluid.

 

 

  • When they wore graduated compression stockings (the firm but comfortable kind), leg swelling was slashed by 1.7 per cent – a clear and statistically significant improvement.

 

 

  • The two NMES devices (the clever geko that sticks to your leg and the Revitive you rest your feet on) also reduced swelling a little on their own.

 

 

But here’s the exciting part the researchers emphasised: earlier studies have already shown that combining NMES devices with graduated compression stockings produces an additive effect on blood flow and muscle pump action. The Imperial College London team say this combination “may translate into added clinical benefit” and they are now calling for bigger trials to confirm just how powerful using both can be.
