EMS And Handball: Every Player In This Study Gained Shoulder Strength

What A 6-Week EMS Trial Found About Tired-Arm Handball Throws

 

Can motion-triggered EMS, added to shoulder training, help healthy players throw better?

 

This study tested whether a six-week motion-triggered EMS shoulder plan could lift shoulder strength and throwing speed in healthy elite handball players.

Scientists compared that plan with the same exercises done without stimulation. They wanted hard numbers, not guesswork.

Researchers tracked shoulder strength and throwing velocity for six weeks.

The story on court

A first-league player steps onto the same indoor court at 5 p.m.
Two days have passed since the last match.
He stands behind the 7-metre line.
A radar gun sits behind the net.

That was the test used in this trial.

 

 

Fourteen male players from Austria’s top league joined.
Their mean age was 19.6 years.
Each already trained at least five team sessions a week.
The study kept out recent surgery, resting pain, and type I or II instability.

 

 

Seven men used EMS with the exercises.
Seven men did the same moves with bands only.
A blinded examiner took the scores.

The trial ran under Vienna ethics approval.
Doctors from the Medical University of Vienna took part.
The AUVA Trauma Center in Vienna joined the work.

What the players actually did

 

 

Both groups trained three times a week.
Each session lasted 30 minutes.
The block ran for six weeks.

 

 

EMS electrodes sat on the back of the shoulder blade.
Current rose and fell with arm angle.
The moves included rows, raises, and throwing-like swings.

 

 

Testers measured two throw scores.
Five hard throws set maximum throwing velocity.
Ten quick throws with tiny rest set endurance throwing velocity.
That second test pushed the arm toward fatigue.

A fixed dynamometer measured force in kilograms.
The key lift for a thrower is external rotation strength.

The numbers that moved

 

 

Every EMS player gained external rotation strength.
That was 100% of the group.
The mean rise was +1.4 kg.
The change reached p = 0.016.

 

 

Only 43% of controls improved on that test.
Their group mean did not rise.
It sat at −0.2 kg.

Internal rotation did not split the groups.

 

Fatigue throwing told the handball story.
Every tested EMS player improved endurance throwing velocity.
That was 100%, against 29% of controls.
The difference in who improved was p = 0.004.
The EMS mean gain was +2.9 km/h.

 

 

Maximum throwing velocity rose in both groups.
EMS did not beat normal training on peak speed in this sample.
One EMS player missed the last throw test after a hamstring strain.

What this suggests for handball players

Match throwing is not one fresh shot.
It is repeat speed when the shoulder is already tired.
In this study, adding EMS to the same shoulder plan helped that tired-arm speed.
It also helped every EMS athlete add external rotation strength.

 

 

That strength supports the late cocking and deceleration of a throw.
Better ER strength is a useful training signal for overhead players.

 

 

The bright reading is simple.
More of the EMS group moved forward on the scores that matter late in a game.
More players improved when the current sat on top of the work.

 

 

The authors still kept the claim tight.
They called EMS a complement, not a replacement.
The sample was small.
It lasted only six weeks.
It included healthy elite men only.

So the honest pitch to players is this.
Keep your normal shoulder work.
In this trial, layering motion-triggered EMS on that work showed extra progress.
The clearest gains were ER strength and speed under fatigue.
That is the part of handball that asks the shoulder to keep firing.
