EMS + Water Training = Stronger Kicks (Science Confirms)
Researchers at Fudan University in Shanghai wanted to know something simple: Could adding NMES make a swimmer’s freestyle kick stronger and smarter?

They tested thirty national-level male freestyle swimmers.
All were highly trained athletes with years of competitive experience.
Half received NMES before every water session.
The other half did the same water training without it.

The study lasted twelve weeks.
Three sessions each week took place in the pool.
NMES was applied on land for just three minutes before swimming.

It targeted the vastus medialis, vastus lateralis and biceps femoris.
Frequency was set at 50 Hz with a 200-microsecond pulse width.

Underwater sensors and high-speed cameras recorded every kick.
Scientists measured muscle activity with iEMG and RMS values.
They also mapped how muscles worked together using synergy analysis.

Results showed clear progress for the NMES group.
Key lower-limb muscles produced higher iEMG and RMS signals.

Vastus medialis and biceps femoris gained greater weight inside the main propulsion synergy.
The postural adjustment synergy became shorter and more efficient.
These changes appeared in both the upward and downward phases of the kick.

The control group improved too, yet the gains stayed smaller.
Adding NMES produced stronger muscle activation and cleaner coordination.
The number of basic movement patterns stayed the same.
What changed was how well the body used them.
