Is the 5-Second Rule Actually Real? Science Just Settled It

Scientists at Rutgers University tested the five-second rule with extreme care. They dropped four foods onto four common surfaces for less than 1, 5, 30 and 300 seconds. They repeated every combination 20 times, creating 2,560 measurements.

Results showed longer contact times increased bacterial transfer. Yet transfer often began almost instantly. Food moisture and surface type mattered just as much as time. Watermelon picked up far more bacteria than gummy candy. Carpet transferred the least.
