A revolutionary new systematic review has confirmed what music lovers have always known: your favourite tunes could be secretly protecting your heart.
Scientists in the United States have carried out the most comprehensive analysis to date on the effects of music on the cardiovascular system – and the results are astonishing.

The study, published in the prestigious journal Trends in Cardiovascular Medicine, examined 26 scientific trials involving 1,342 people and found clear, consistent positive evidence that music can lower blood pressure, reduce heart rate, improve heart rate variability (HRV), enhance exercise performance and cut dangerous stress hormones.

Lead researcher Dr Jacquelyn Kulinski, a cardiologist at the Medical College of Wisconsin, and her team say music works by gently stimulating the autonomic nervous system – the part of the body that controls unconscious functions like heartbeat and breathing.
The magic is in the tempo

Slow, soothing music had the biggest relaxation effect, significantly lowering blood pressure and heart rate in both healthy volunteers and people with hypertension.

In one standout trial, pre-hypertensive young men who listened to relaxing piano and flute music for just 30 minutes a day, five days a week, saw their systolic blood pressure drop by 8.73 mmHg and heart rate fall by 6.42 beats per minute – results doctors say are comparable to some medications.

Fast-tempo music (around 130 beats per minute) proved brilliant for workouts. Participants who listened to upbeat tracks while cycling or lifting weights exercised 10.7% longer, felt less exhausted and recovered 13% faster afterwards.

In patients with established cardiovascular disease taking part in cardiac rehabilitation, personalised tempo-matched music playlists helped them achieve almost double the weekly exercise volume compared to standard care.
Singing and playing instruments deliver benefits too

Group choir singing – especially meditative mantra singing – produced the highest heart rate variability, a powerful marker of strong vagal tone that protects against heart attacks.

Even playing a simple wind instrument for 5–10 weeks improved lung function, walking distance and perceived exertion in elderly women.
Stress-busting bonus that could save lives

Music listening also significantly reduced cortisol levels. In one group of elderly patients on dialysis, those with the greatest reductions in cortisol after music therapy had far better 5-year cardiovascular survival rates (81.6% vs 63.6%).
So what should YOU listen to?

The review found the style of music matters less than the tempo and how much you enjoy it:
- For relaxation and lower blood pressure: Slow classical, piano, flute or gentle ambient tracks
- For better exercise performance: Upbeat songs matched to your walking or running pace
- Live music or singing with others appears especially powerful for heart rate variability
Not a miracle cure – but almost free and totally safe

The researchers stress that music is not a replacement for medication or exercise, but a low-cost, zero-risk, enjoyable addition that could help millions.
“Music has enormous potential as a non-pharmacological intervention for improving cardiovascular health,” Dr Kulinski and her colleagues conclude. “It’s low-risk, easily accessible, and patients actually enjoy it.”

They are now calling for larger, longer-term trials in people with heart failure, after heart attacks and in cardiac rehabilitation programmes.
