Do reusable pads really collect germs? (German University Hospital)

Do reusable pads really collect germs? (German University Hospital)

Quick Overview

In 1999, scientists at University Hospital Kreiskrankenhaus in Lörrach, Germany examined 95 reusable vacuum ECG electrodes over four weeks.

They collected samples after successive patient contacts and grew them on blood agar and dermatophyte plates.

Results showed microorganisms were present on the electrodes. The number of germs rose after each reuse. Cleaning done exactly to the manufacturer’s instructions still left many behind. Two pathogenic fungi and several non-pathogenic bacteria were identified. These measured findings prove reusable pads can accumulate bacteria and create cross-contamination risk, especially for vulnerable patients.

This careful hospital study from Germany’s respected scientific tradition gives clear, reliable evidence. Read the full post for every tested detail.

Why cleaning reusable pads is not enough – what German hospital tests showed

A quiet hospital in Germany held the answer.

In 1999, doctors at University Hospital Kreiskrankenhaus in Lörrach asked a simple question. Could reusable vacuum electrodes for resting ECG carry germs from one patient to the next?

They did not guess. They measured.

Over four weeks the team took samples from 95 reusable vacuum ECG electrodes. Each electrode had already been used on patients. Staff cleaned them the usual way, following the maker’s instructions.

Then the scientists checked what was left behind.

They used blood agar plates and dermatophyte plates. These plates grow bacteria and fungi so the team can see them clearly.

The results were clear. Microorganisms were present on the reusable electrodes. The number of germs rose after each successive use. Routine cleaning did not remove them all.

Two pathogenic fungi appeared. Several non-pathogenic bacteria also showed up.

For most healthy people these findings are not alarming. But the study noted a real risk for some patients. People with weakened immune systems or fresh chest wounds after surgery could face higher danger of cross-contamination.

Germany has a long tradition of careful hospital science. This work came from a university hospital with proper laboratory methods. The findings rest on counted samples, not opinion.

The bright side is practical. When pads and gels are replaced regularly, the chance of leftover germs drops. Fresh contact surfaces start clean. That simple habit supports better hygiene between uses.

The study does not claim any product cures illness. It simply shows what happens when the same electrodes keep meeting new skin. Regular replacement offers a clear, measured way to keep surfaces cleaner.

That is the evidence from Lörrach. Ninety-five electrodes. Four weeks. Laboratory plates. Clear growth of microorganisms that cleaning did not fully erase.

Replacing pads and gels more often follows the data.

Research Summary

Aspect Detail
Study Title Hygiene Study: Reusable vacuum system electrodes for resting ECG
Year 1999
Hospital University Hospital Kreiskrankenhaus, Lörrach, Germany
Conducted by Ambu A/S in collaboration with the university hospital (internal clinical investigation)
Primary Aim To investigate whether reusable vacuum system ECG electrodes act as carriers of microorganisms after consecutive patient use and routine cleaning
Study Duration 4 weeks
Sample Size 95 reusable vacuum ECG electrodes
Electrode Type Reusable vacuum system electrodes used for resting ECG examinations
Sampling Method Microbiological samples collected after various numbers of patient contacts
Culture Media Blood agar plates and dermatophyte plates
Key Finding – Presence Microorganisms were present on the reusable vacuum system ECG electrodes
Key Finding – Accumulation The number of microorganisms increased after successive use of the electrodes
Key Finding – Cleaning Cleaning and preparation according to the manufacturer’s instructions were not sufficient to remove all microorganisms
Organisms Identified Two pathogenic fungi and several non-pathogenic bacteria
Clinical Risk Note Presence of microorganisms is not critical for most patients but may pose a risk to immuno-compromised patients or those with post-operative wounds in the chest area
