A brand-new subanalysis of the TEST-III trial, published in Clinical Interventions in Aging, has just dropped a bombshell for every woman over 70 who’s given up on traditional exercise.

Researchers at the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg in Germany tested Whole body EMS – a high-tech Full body EMS system that delivers gentle electrical pulses to 16 major muscle groups at once while you do simple standing movements.

The results? Nothing short of jaw-dropping for a group that most fitness programmes ignore.

The Study in Plain English

They recruited 46 lean, sedentary women (average age 75) who were abdominally obese by international standards (waist >80 cm) but barely moved – less than 60 minutes of exercise a week. Half were randomly assigned to Whole body EMS: just 18 minutes, three times every two weeks (yes, that’s roughly 21 minutes a week total). The other half did low-intensity gymnastics as an “active” control.

After 12 full months, the differences were crystal clear:

  • Appendicular muscle mass (the key marker for sarcopenia): Whole body EMS group → +0.5% Control group → –0.8% (Statistically significant, P=0.025)
  • Abdominal fat mass (the dangerous visceral kind linked to heart disease and diabetes): Whole body EMS group → –1.2% Control group → +2.4% (P=0.038)
  • Upper-leg muscle (crucial for walking and independence): +0.5% vs –0.9%
  • Leg-extensor strength (real-world power): +9.1% vs +1.0%

Even waist circumference dropped by more than an inch in the Whole body EMS group while it increased in the controls.

Why This Matters – And It’s Huge

These women weren’t overweight couch potatoes; they were lean but still carrying dangerous belly fat and heading toward frailty. Traditional exercise simply doesn’t appeal to most of them – only 20% of German women over 65 hit the recommended activity levels.

Whole body EMS appears to be the perfect “lazy girl’s” solution: super-short, supervised, no heavy weights, and surprisingly acceptable. Attendance was a solid 76%, dropout was low, and the only complaint from one participant was “slight muscular soreness” – hardly a deal-breaker at 75.

Lead author Professor Wolfgang Kemmler sums it up perfectly:

“Whole body EMS may be a less off-putting alternative to impact appendicular muscle mass and abdominal fat mass, at least for subjects unwilling or unable to exercise conventionally.”

The Verdict

This isn’t some dodgy infomercial gadget. It’s peer-reviewed science from a respected university, using gold-standard DXA scans for body composition. The effect sizes (0.6–0.8) are comparable to far more demanding resistance-training programmes that most older women would never stick to.

Of course, it’s not magic. You still need to do the light movements while the Full body EMS system zaps you, and sessions are supervised by trained instructors (the equipment costs around €8,000, so it’s not something you’ll find in every village hall yet). But for time-poor, motivation-poor older women – or anyone who dreads the gym – this could be life-changing.
