Pad used in everyday therapy settings are not as clean as most people think.

A careful study from Spain proved it.

Researchers from CEU San Pablo University in Madrid looked closely at real physiotherapy clinics. They collected samples from 19 centres. They checked treatment tables, equipment, hands, and the air.

The biggest problem sat on the sponge electrodes — the soft pads many therapists reuse. These pads held the highest number of bacteria. The difference was clear and statistically strong (P < .01).

Scientists found many types of microbes. Some were common skin bacteria. Others were known hospital pathogens. Staphylococcus, Acinetobacter, and certain gut-related bacteria all appeared.

Ultrasound gel also showed contamination in several samples. Even small amounts of bacteria can grow when moisture and warmth stay present.

The study was published in 2020 in the respected journal Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. This journal belongs to the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine. The work came from university scientists with proper microbiology training. Spain has a long record of careful medical research.
